Tulsa Hoteliers Join Nationwide Call for Congress to Pass HOPE Act

AAHOA Member Pete Patel is leading a contingent of Oklahoma hoteliers calling for Congress to act quickly and pass the HOPE Act as the COVID-19 pandemic drags on. Patel's company, Promise Hotels, owns and operates a dozen hotels in the Tulsa area, but even a successful business like his is having a tough time. "Personally, we've never had to lay off or furlough anybody in our history, the 25 years we've been in the hospitality industry," Patel said.

But that all changed in March, now Patel and others need Congress’ help to survive. "I look at it this way,” AAHOA President & CEO Cecil P. Staton said. “You either invest now, or you're going to pay the price later, with greater unemployment and many failed businesses littering the Main Streets of America." SBA, Treasury Release Additional Guidance on Paycheck Protection Program Policy

On Monday, the Small Business Administration and the Treasury Department released the Interim Final Rule - Treatment of Owners and Forgiveness of Certain Nonpayroll Costs. The purpose of this interim final rule is to provide additional guidance concerning the ownership percentage that triggers the applicability of the five owner compensation rule for forgiveness purposes and limitations on the eligibility of certain nonpayroll costs for forgiveness.

STR: U.S. Hotel P&L Turned Positive in July, the First Time Since February

U.S. hotel gross operating profit per available room (GOPPAR) reached positive territory for the first time since February, according to STR‘s latest monthly P&L data release. July’s aggregated GOPPAR was down 93.3% year over year, but hotels came out net positive, recording a $5.74 GOPPAR. “As the industry inched closer to 50% occupancy, we saw continued incremental improvement in the subsequent profitability metrics,”

Raquel Ortiz, STR’s assistant director of financial performance, said. “We are of course nowhere near pre-pandemic levels, but there were additional encouraging signs in positive GOPPAR for full-service hotels and six major markets.” See the full report here.
