Update for Friday, September 4

AAHOA is bringing you the latest information as it relates to COVID-19 and your business.

Help AAHOA help hotel owners by sharing this update with owners in your network, whether they're AAHOA Members or not. Turn to AAHOA's Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter accounts for the latest.

AAHOA Members,

A government funding bill and COVID-19 relief package will be the headliners on Congress’s agenda next week as lawmakers return from the August recess. Yesterday evening, Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and Speaker Pelosi struck an informal deal to avert a potential government shutdown on September 30. If passed by month's end, a continuing resolution will keep the government funded through the end of the year, likely clearing the floor for continued talks over the next wave of COVID-19 relief.
The drawn-out impasse in negotiations continues to impair the recovery of small businesses and communities in need of assistance. I encourage you to contact your legislators through our campaign or by following the steps in this guide.

AAHOA is here for you every step of the way, and I want to thank you for communicating and working with us as we lead our industry during these challenging times. I hope that you and your loved ones enjoy the Labor Day weekend.

Cecil P. Staton

AAHOA President & CEO

STR: Hotel Occupancy Falls Slightly for the Second Straight Week

U.S. hotel occupancy decreased slightly for the second consecutive week, according to the latest data from STR, released yesterday. The industry sold 237,000 fewer room nights than the previous week, which represented a demand decrease of 1.3%. Week-over-week demand improvements were a constant since mid-April, but as summer ends and leisure travel fades, hotel performance gains have flattened. See the full report here.

Whether you're ready to welcome visitors today or at some point in the future, everyone in the travel industry is encouraged to join this national conversation to reignite America’s sense of wanderlust. COVID-19 Relief Package, Avoiding Government Shutdown Top Congress’ Agenda After Recess

Though Congress is on recess through Labor Day, reports suggest the White House, the House, and the Senate are restarting negotiations on the next coronavirus relief package. There appears to be bipartisan support on a number of issues, including the Paycheck Protection Program. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows met on Friday to discuss potential avenues for moving forward, though the results of that meeting are unclear.

Congress also will need to reach an agreement by September 30 on how to fund the government to avoid a shutdown. Congress likely will pass a continuing resolution to keep the government funded at current levels until after the election. Treasury Secretary Speaks Before U.S. House Subcommittee on Coronavirus Crisis

Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin spoke before the U.S. House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis on Tuesday. Regarding additional relief for the hardest-hit sectors, Mnuchin said: “While we continue to see signs of a strong economic recovery, we are sensitive to the fact that there is more work to be done, and certain areas of the economy require additional relief.

I believe a bipartisan agreement still should be reached and would provide substantial funds for schools, testing, vaccines, PPP for small businesses, continued enhanced unemployment benefits, child care, nutrition, agriculture, and the U.S. Postal Service, along with liability protection for universities, schools, and businesses.” Read the full statement here, then do your part to help by signing this letter to Congress.
