Weekend Update: House Passes USPS Bill; Senate, White House Not in Support

The House on Saturday passed a bill that would bar the U.S. Postal Service from making any changes to its operations amid the coronavirus pandemic and give the agency $25 billion in additional funding. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated the Senate wouldn’t be taking up the House bill and the White House threatened to veto it.

The House bill is aimed at rolling back service cuts at the U.S. Postal Service that Democrats say could harm the ability of Americans to vote by mail in the November presidential election that’s being shadowed by the coronavirus pandemic. President Trump, who has voted by mail, railed against the House action on Saturday, terming it a “HOAX by the Democrats” and continuing to draw a distinction between mail-in ballots, which he says are subject to fraud, and absentee voting.

Amid the COVID Pandemic, Motels Are Staging a Major Comeback

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, motels are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Typically one-to-two stories with exterior corridors and parking spaces in close proximity to the guestroom doors, motels allow guests to avoid contact with others: They typically don’t feature elevators nor do they have large common spaces so guests have a sense of control over their environment, Jan Freitag, senior vice president of Lodging Insights for STR, said in a Washington Post article. And there’s another factor.

The larger hotels that remained open (or reopened) didn’t reopen their spas, fitness centers, indoor dining rooms, swimming pools, and other amenities but were trying to keep their room rates almost as high as before. Add in the fact that most people who are resuming traveling are opting for road trips and you have the perfect storm for a motel renaissance. Read the full article here.
