WSJ: Smaller and Private Hotels Hurry to Raise Cash

Some hotel owners are faced with property sales at discounted prices and expensive financing now that federal aid is poised to expire. Larger hotel owners have drawn down their credit lines and sold bonds, which will help tide them over a volatile recovery, said Robert Webster, vice chairman of CBRE Hotels. But many smaller and private hotel owners are hoping for more government assistance. The lodging industry’s budding recovery in June now looks impeded by the recent rise in coronavirus cases. ICYMI: Help Veterans and Their Families in Need of Re-Housing

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Supportive Services for Veteran Families program assists low-income veteran families that are currently in or transitioning to permanent housing. SSVF is designed to rapidly re-house veteran families and prevent homelessness for those at imminent risk due to the current housing crisis. The HOPE Act: Congressmen Introduce Bill to Provide Relief for Those with CMBS Debt

Congressmen Van Taylor (R-TX-03), Al Lawson (D-FL-05), and Andy Barr (R-KY-06) recently introduced legislation in the House to provide economic support to the commercial real estate (CRE) market, especially for businesses with CMBS debt. “The COVID-19 economic downturn has created a terrible crisis for thousands of small business owners who depend on hotel and travel industries,” AAHOA President & CEO Cecil P. Staton said. “The HOPE Act will provide hotel owners with liquidity when they need it most.”

The PPP Closes Tomorrow; Get Your Application in Now

The highly popular PPP closes again on tomorrow, August 8, so it’s vital to submit an application if you’re still in need of a PPP loan. The PPP was passed by Congress as a part of the CARES Act to offer relief to small business owners damaged by the COVID-19 and was later amended by the PPP Flexibility Act. See an updated FAQ about the program here and a recent summary of the lending thus far here.

Coronavirus Relief Package: No Deal in Sight

Ten times over the past two weeks, Congressional Democrats and the White House have met to try to reach a deal on a new coronavirus relief package. And 10 times, those meetings have yielded little outcomes. After a three-hour meeting Thursday night, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin emerged to say they had made progress on small-bore items but remain trillions of dollars apart on an overall package. So, for now, there won’t be another COVID-19 stimulus bill, and now both sides will have to figure out how to position themselves amid the rubble of what might be Congress’ biggest swing and miss in a decade.
