AAHOA Members,

For the past several months, our Board, Ambassadors, Committees, members, team, and coalition partners have been pushing for relief for hoteliers with CMBS loans and to address the larger debt crisis in the lodging industry.

Today, Senate Banking Chairman Mike Crapo (R-ID)
sent this letter to Federal Reserve Chairman Powell and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin urging their expansion or creation of a facility to address the needs of our industry.

The proposed program would create a federally guaranteed preferred equity facility that would provide liquidity without undertaking additional debt. Ultimately, this approach would avoid breaching CMBS covenants and create a much-needed lifeline. Non-CMBS borrowers could also take advantage of this program. This is the relief we have been seeking and it is because of the steadfast efforts from our industry and association, which have been exceptional. AAHOA Members should take pride in your efforts, which brought your voices to Capitol Hill during this most trying crisis.

To be sure, this is not the end of the fight. We must continue to press during negotiations and continue to raise the profile of our industry to ensure these programs are developed quickly. It will also not solve all our problems. But today’s letter is a critical step in action to help hoteliers who have largely been dealing with considerable uncertainty. I look forward to continuing our efforts moving forward.

In addition, after four days of negotiating the next COVID-19 economic stimulus bill, Congress has yielded little progress toward a bipartisan bill. The August recess is scheduled to begin next week but the slow pace of negotiations could have lawmakers staying close to D.C. as Democratic and Republican leadership seek to strike a deal. As Congress continues to debate over the stimulus package, AAHOA still needs you to take action and urge your elected officials to support our industry priorities before it’s too late.

Sincerely,

Cecil P. Staton
