It's been nearly four months since Congress rushed to pass the CARES Act, the historic $2.2 trillion COVID-19 economic stimulus package. Since returning to Washington, D.C. last week, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are gearing up for negotiations set to take place early next week after Republicans roll out their proposed stimulus bill. Rest assured, AAHOA is working diligently to ensure the interests of America’s hoteliers are heard loud and clear. Our industry priorities and letter of requests to Congress can be viewed in this press release.

AAHOA is here for you every step of the way, and I want to thank you for communicating and working with us as we lead our industry during these challenging times.

AAHOA Warns Congress That, Without Relief, the Hospitality Industry Will Inevitably Collapse

To help avert a catastrophic economic collapse of the hospitality industry, Congress must take specific and necessary actions. That was the urgent core message of the letter AAHOA sent to Congressional leadership yesterday. In the letter, AAHOA highlighted the unique challenges facing hotel owners, from the liquidity crisis that has plagued the industry since pandemic’s start to the limitations and complications hoteliers encountered while attempting to seek relief from earlier stimulus efforts such as the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

“The small businesses that own and operate the thousands of hotels across the country and the millions of jobs they support will not recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic until people begin traveling again,” AAHOA President & CEO Cecil P. Staton said. “Until that time, hotel owners need targeted and immediate economic stimulus or the industry will collapse.” Hotel occupancy rates cratered with the onset of this pandemic, and without guests to serve, rooms to clean, shuttles to drive, or meals to prepare, hoteliers find themselves without working capital to pay employees and meet their debt obligations. Most experts anticipate that the industry will not recover until at least 2023. Read the full letter here.

AHLA ‘Safe Stay' Checklist Helps Guests Travel with Confidence

To help travelers determine whether that is indeed the case and to help create a standardized safety experience nationwide, AHLA has developed the “Safe Stay Guest Checklist,” which guides people on how to travel safely. AAHOA is proud to represent the voice of America’s hotel owners on the advisory council that developed the Safe Stay guidelines. The new checklist features five recommendations that will help guests stay safe while traveling.

White House Signals Willingness to Consider Extension of Enhanced Unemployment Benefits

As the expiration date on the federal program that provided unemployment benefits to millions of jobless Americans nears, the White House has begun signaling its willingness to approve a narrow extension of the enhanced benefits. The program, which provides an additional $600-a-week increase to unemployment benefits, expires in less than two weeks and experts warn the loss of it could hinder the economic recovery and deprive millions of people of a crucial lifeline. Battle Over COVID-19 Relief Consumes Congress’ Final Sprint to Recess

As Congress reconvenes this week in Washington, D.C., at the top of the agenda is to finalize and pass a phase 4 coronavirus relief bill before the next recess begins on August 7. Democrats passed their version of a relief bill, the HEROES Act, in May, while Republicans are expected to release their relief plan next week and have unveiled major parts of the bill even as they struggle to come to a consensus on what it should include. Our fight for relief and protection for the hospitality industry is not over.
