Government Report: 1.4 Million Workers File New Claims for State Unemployment Benefits
The U.S. government reported on Thursday that more than 1.4 million workers filed new claims for state unemployment benefits last week, the first time that the weekly tally has risen in more than three months. The upturn, from about 1.3 million in the two preceding weeks, comes just days before an extra $600-a-week jobless benefit is set to expire. “At this stage, you’re seeing all the wrong elements for recovery,” Gregory Daco, the chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics, said.

“A deteriorating health situation, a weakening labor market, and a softening path for demand.” An additional 975,000 claims were filed last week by freelancers, part-time workers, and others who do not qualify for regular state jobless aid but are eligible for benefits under an emergency federal program, the Labor Department said. Unlike the state figures, that number is not seasonally adjusted. Read the full report here.

U.S. Hindu Alliance Pays Tribute to Congressman John Lewis

The U.S. Hindu Alliance yesterday paid tribute to legendary civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis, who passed away on July 17 at age 80. Rajeev Menon, VP of USHA, opened the video tribute by lauding Lewis, who spent more than 50 years of his life fighting for the rights of African Americans and other disenfranchised people. Menon was the first of more than 15 speakers, including AAHOA Chairman Biran Patel, who weighed in on the legacy of Lewis. “America is profoundly richer for Rep. John Lewis’ service and sacrifice in Congress,” Patel said.

“His life inspired change on a multitude of levels. As a civil rights leader, he helped broaden our common path forward as people and as a nation.” The son of sharecroppers, Lewis was only 23 years old when he delivered his iconic keynote speech standing next to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the historic 1963 March on Washington.
