Coalition Letter: Temporary and Targeted Liability Relief Legislation

Today, May 27, AAHOA along with many coalition partners, set a letter to Congress urging them to quickly enact temporary and targeted liability relief legislation related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The letter notes that “members and constituencies are concerned that, despite doing their best to follow applicable guidelines, they will be forced to defend against an onslaught of frivolous lawsuits.”

Many are concerned that the prospect of such litigation and associated exorbitant legal costs are a deterrent to reopening as past surveys have shown that many small businesses are one lawsuit away from closing for good.

Upcoming Webinar on the Impact of Shutdowns from a Water Quality Perspective

To help slow the spread of COVID-19, many facilities were shut down or sparsely used. This can lead to the water in pipes becoming stagnant, which can cause a variety of issues, including increased risk for regrowth of pathogens. While our understanding of water-quality impacts due to long-term closures is still developing, this webcast will provide current information and recommendations on what water utilities, public health officials, and building owners should consider when buildings reopen.

Moderated by Grace Jang (PhD, Research Program Manager, The Water Research Foundation), this webinar will take place 3-4:30 p.m. EDT tomorrow, Thursday, May 28.

CDC Issues Compilation of Guidance to Assist Reopening Initiatives
The CDC recently released its Activities and Initiatives Supporting the COVID-19 Response and the President’s Plan for Opening America Up Again guidance in response to the nation’s slow but steady march toward fully reopening the economy. Though the 60-page document contains little new information, it does consolidate various previously published recommendations, including critical infrastructure employer guidance, general business guidance, and some industry- or occupation-specific guidance.

The document also includes helpful decision-making tools such as the Workplace Decision Tool, which walks employers through considerations for reopening.

MultiState Issues COVID-19 Reopening Guide That Makes It Easy to Compare States

States have started shifting their focus from managing the COVID-19 pandemic to the economic recovery phase, and as such, many have announced a “phased reopening.” Because each state handled their pandemic response differently and each state’s degree of “openess” relies on many factors, MultiState developed a guide that took 11 of those factors and condensed them into one easy-to-comprehend “openess score.” The guide, which is updated daily, makes it easy to compare states to one another.

New Control Plan Helps California Hoteliers Reopen Safely for Guests, Employees

Coming up with the right plan to reopen their properties safely for employees and guests can be the ultimate challenge for California hotel owners. Petra Risk Solutions has taken the guesswork out of it by creating the COVID-19 Prevention and Exposure Control Plan, required by Cal/OSHA. On May 12, Cal/OSHA set guidelines for operating a hotel in the COVID-19 era, and these guidelines require a COVID-19 written prevention and exposure control plan, similar to the state’s Injury Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP). While this plan can be adapted and used in other states, all state-specific guidelines and regulations must be adhered to.

PwC Publishes Hospitality Directions U.S. Report

March declines were unprecedented, with April’s and May’s even worse as COVID-19 impacted the U.S. lodging industry as never before. Those are the main findings from PwC’s Hospitality Directions U.S. report. U.S. hotels experienced declines in top-line performance in March, with RevPAR dropping 51.9% from the same month last year. The second quarter is expected to experience even greater declines, with RevPAR dropping close to 80% from the same period in 2019. The length and severity of the pandemic remains uncertain and is discussed in more detail in the expanded edition of the report.
