AAHOA Highlights Liquidity, Economic Stimulus, and Phased Reopening at Travel and Tourism Roundtable with Vice President Pence

Today, AAHOA Lifetime Member and Government Affairs Committee Member Danny Gaekwad represented AAHOA in a roundtable discussion in Florida with Vice President Mike Pence, Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Joined by other industry leaders, Danny gave testimony on how hoteliers across the country have been affected by COVID-19, and praise DeSantis and the Trump administration for their leadership and lifeline they’ve extended throughout the pandemic.

“This pandemic hit the hotel industry particularly hard, and owners and employees alike continue to struggle,” said Danny Gaekwad, Chairman of OSEM Hospitality Management. “Reopening our businesses with common-sense precautions that prioritize the health and wellbeing of employees and guests will help our industry and our state get our economy moving again.”

After Danny asked for an extension on PPP loans, Pence mentioned that something is in the works. Watch the entire discussion here, and read AAHOA’s press release on the event.

AAHOA, Coalition Partners, Send Letter to Congress on Hotel Industry Priorities for CARES 2.0

Today, AAHOA along with hotel-industry coalition partners, sent a letter to Congressional leadership on the latest hotel industry priorities for CARES 2.0. The letter states that hotel employees and local hotel owners have been impacted by COVID-19 through no fault of their own, and both need assistance to make it through the crisis. The letter outlines industry priorities as Congress considered additional legislation to address the health crisis and economic fallout from COVID-19.

The top five priorities include:

  1. Provisions benefiting hotel employees
  2. Safe harbor provisions for hotels and other places of public accommodation
  3. Establishing new Federal programs to aid industry solvency
  4. Supporting small businesses utilizing the CARES Act relief programs
  5. Recommendations on how to incentivize travel and tourism

Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Update: Updated FAQ

Yesterday, the SBA posted its latest frequently updated Frequently Asked Questions Document, which includes new guidance (Question 48) for the question, “What is the deadline for lenders to complete the initial SBA Form 1502 reporting process?” In the guidance, the SBA says it’s extending the deadline for lenders to electronically upload the initial SBA Form 1502 reporting information to the later of: (1) May 29, 2020, or (2) 10 calendar days after disbursement or cancellation of the PPP loan.

In other PPP developments, it’s reported that many companies returned funds received through the Paycheck Protection Program yesterday after the Trump administration signaled it would apply heightened scrutiny to larger companies that received the loans, and those that received a loan of $2 million or more.

The Latest Updates from the Government

The latest news suggests the Trump administration is preparing to extend international travel restrictions and border control measures, while officials announced yesterday that the U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico will remain closed to nonessential travel through June 21. Also, by the end of May, the Federal Reserve is preparing to launch the Main Street Lending program, which will provide loans to businesses that were in good financial standing before the pandemic.

Travel-Related Unemployment Hits 51% Just Ahead of Memorial Day

More than 51% of the U.S.’s 16 million travel-related jobs have been eliminated since the outbreak of COVID-19. According to data released yesterday by the U.S. Travel Association, this has resulted in an unemployment number that is more than twice the rate the U.S. experienced at the worst of the Great Depression. Prepared for the U.S. Travel Association by the research firm Tourism Economics, the troubling report has come less than a week before the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

STR: U.S. Hotel Results for Week Ending May 16

STR data ending with May 16 showed continued modest gains in U.S. hotel performance compared with previous weeks. Year-over-year declines remain significant although not as severe as the levels recorded in April. May 10-16, 2020 (percentage change from comparable week in 2019):

  • Occupancy: 32.4% (-54.1%)
  • Average daily rate (ADR): US$77.55 (-42.4%)
  • Revenue per available room (RevPAR): US$25.12 (-73.6%)

“The trend of ‘less bad’ data continued with occupancy and ADR on a slow climb driven by a fifth consecutive week-to-week increase in demand,” said Jan Freitag, STR’s senior VP of lodging insights.

Dimple Patel, Jigisha Patel, Villas Patel Answer the Call to Create Care Packages
Lifetime Members Dimple Patel, Jigisha Patel, and Villas Patel all came through like champs in response to a new AAHOA initiative to create care packages for those in need. Dimple and Jigisha of Northern Kentucky enlisted their children and together they created 51 care packages for a homeless shelter in Cincinnati, OH.

Villas, a Gulf Region Ambassador from Columbus, MS, created care packages for drive-by and pick-up through her non-profit Parole2Pride, which was created by Villas and her husband, Jayesh, to help nonviolent offenders get back into the workforce.

The new initiative is the brainchild of AAHOA Female Directors Nimisha Patel and Lina Patel, and Chairwoman Jagruti Panwala. The three are challenging hotel owners to create 51 care packages per household. The kits will be made to benefit homeless shelters or women’s shelters in the community. Collect soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, tissues, hand sanitizers, and feminine hygiene products, and package them together in a Ziploc bag or a lunch bag. Use this time of social distancing to come together as a family, make memories, and make a positive impact.
