Dear AAHOA Members,

Earlier today, I again joined AHLA President & CEO Chip Rogers, Noble Investments Founder & CEO Mit Shah, and NewcrestImage Chairman & CEO Mehul Patel for a live-streamed webcast where we continued our discussion on the post-COVID-19 recovery process. If you were unable to attend, you can view this webcast on demand by following this link. I also spoke with longtime AAHOA friend Teague Hunter in his latest episode of Teague Talks, where we discussed recovery efforts, AAHOA advocacy on behalf of the industry, and #AAHOACON20.

The AAHOA team has been working diligently to ensure our valued members are equipped with the latest industry knowledge and COVID-19 insights. This week, we published our 100th webcast in 2020, and I applaud our team’s efforts and the contributions of the panelists who helped make this possible.

In the coming weeks, AAHOA’s Government Affairs team will be providing timely updates and targeted advocacy as Congress debates the next round of economic stimulus in response to COVID-19. The HEROES Act in the House includes much-needed technical corrections to the Paycheck Protection Program that we've advocated for since March.

I extend my gratitude to our members helping AAHOA to meet the challenges we face today while preparing our industry for the opportunities recovery will bring in the months to come.

Sincerely,

Cecil P. Staton

AAHOA President & CEO

House Keeps Pushing Ahead on the HEROES Act

The HEROES Act, a $3-trillion COVID-19 relief plan that includes monies for state, local, and tribal communities, a second round of direct economic payments to individual Americans, and fixes for the CARES Act – among many other Democratic priorities – cleared an early procedural hurdle this afternoon. With Republicans united in opposition, it barely cleared a procedural vote to pave the way for further debate. The vote was 207-199, with 14 Democrats joining Republicans to vote no.

Coalition Letter: Three Key Enhancements to Opportunity Zone Tax Incentives

AAHOA, along with many coalition partners, has signed on to a letter asking for improvements to the Opportunity Zone tax incentives, an area where there should be a strong, bipartisan consensus. The letter asks for “bold policies” to help preserve the local tax base that finances critical services in low-income communities. As one element of economic stimulus legislation, the letter urges three key enhancements to the Opportunity Zone tax incentives.

U.S. Travel Association Analysis: “Economy Is in Recession, But Travel Industry Is in Depression”

Initial findings in a new analysis suggest the travel industry is in a depression with overall travel industry unemployment at 51% twice the unemployment of the worst year of the Great Depression. Though travel spending continues to show modest signs of improvement, ticking – if slowly – upward, the travel economy still registered 87% below 2019 levels, recording a $19-billion loss for the week of May 9. Since the beginning of March, the U.S. travel economy has suffered more than $157 billion in losses.

Those are two of the more sobering findings in a new weekly analysis released by Tourism Economics in conjunction with the U.S. Travel Association, STR, and Airline Data Inc. The analysis breaks down the impact of the coronavirus on travel spending on the national, regional, and state levels.
