“Brain-eating amoeba.” Learn about rare infections such as Naegleria flowleri. This amoeba lives in soil and warm bodies of fresh water, especially during the summer. It is naturally occurring and DPH recently announced that a Georgia resident died from this rare brain infection.

A new office has been formed within the US Department of Health and Human Services to lead the nation’s response to the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

The Fast-Spreading New COVID-19 Subvariant XBB Is Part of a ‘New Class’ of Omicron

 

The variant was first detected in August 2022 in India, and has been detected in more than 17 countries since then, including Australia, Bangladesh, Denmark, India, Japan and the U.S.

 

PSA: 988 Suicide & Crisis lifeline

 

GHA's latest PSA, airing on Georgia radio stations for the month of August, reminds listeners of the important resource of the 988 Suicide & Crisis lifeline. There is also mention of the MyGCAL app for text and chat assistance, as well as the Georgia-specific website 988ga.org.

 

Allergy Caused by Tick Bites on the Rise, but Clinicians in the Dark

 

Today in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, authors from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describe alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), a growing tick bite-associated allergy to mammal meat and milk.

 

Georgia Resident Dies from Rare Brain Infection, Naegleria Fowleri Confirmed as Cause

 

A Georgia resident has died from Naegleria fowleri infection, a rare infection which destroys brain tissue, causing brain swelling and usually death. The individual was likely infected while swimming in a freshwater lake or pond in Georgia.
