End of the Public Health Emergency Declaration; What it Means for Georgians

 

The federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) declaration expired at the end of the day on May 11. Now that we have safe and effective vaccines, ample testing infrastructure, and most people have some level of immunity due to vaccination or infection, COVID-19 is no longer a public health emergency.

As health officials continue to track and manage one of the largest bird flu outbreaks in recorded history, the virus is beginning to spill over into mammals – including humans. While human infections are still few and far between, health experts say it only takes one perfect combination of mutations for the virus to cause widespread transmission among the human population. 

 

Updated Health Care Response Capabilities Comment Period and Informational Sessions

 

Over the last year, ASPR conducted targeted engagement with those working at all levels of health care preparedness and response; from frontline providers to state and federal operations staff, to gather input for the updated capabilities. Outbreak of Suspected Fungal Meningitis in U.S.

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued this Health Alert Network Health Advisory about an outbreak of suspected fungal meningitis among U.S. patients hospitalized in Texas after undergoing cosmetic procedures under epidural anesthesia in the city of Matamoros, state of Tamaulipas, Mexico.

 

AHA Case Study: Innovative Strategies to Reduce Workplace Violence

 

A new AHA case study highlights innovative strategies from NewYork-Presbyterian to reduce workplace violence risk. Based in New York City, the 11-hospital health system uses electronic medical record flagging, behavioral risk assessment and mass casualty event training to prevent and mitigate workplace violence incidents.

A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report details persistent problems at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that impaired the country's ability to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and other public health crises and extreme weather events.
