President's Corner

Tatsuya Norii, MD, FACEP

It is my pleasure to write my first “chapter president corner”. I probably should start by introducing myself. I am Tatsuya Norii, the new president of the NM chapter of ACEP.

I graduated medical school in Japan and did emergency medicine and critical care trainings before coming to the US. One of the senior faculty members at the University of New Mexico (UNM), Dr. France Doyle, visited my hospital in Japan in 2008 and suggested I come to UNM to get further experience (if “you want to see some crazy stuff”). So, I came to NM in 2011 to complete my emergency medicine residency training at UNM. I am still here and am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UNM. My son was born here and speaks Spanish and English at school and loves looking at hot air balloons and also chasing roadrunners. New Mexico is our home.

I have a few stories to share. I recently attended the ACEP leadership and advocacy conference (LAC) in DC. READ MORE

Resident's Corner

Sean Rooks, MD

For this quarter's edition of Resident’s Corner we will be talking with Brett Ziercher. Brett is originally from the Midwest, did his Emergency Medicine training at the University of New Mexico, and currently serves as the medical director at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. Today he is going to talk with us about some of the unique challenges he faces in his practice environment and how he has progressed through his career in Emergency Medicine. READ MORE

NM ACEP as a Medical Student

Peter Dailey, MD

My name is Peter Dailey, a recently graduated medical student matched into emergency medicine at the University of Virginia. I have had the privilege of working with New Mexico ACEP since I started medical school at UNM in 2015, and I attribute a large portion of my successful match into emergency medicine residency to the connections and relationships I was able to build through our local organization.

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the ACEP leadership and advocacy conference in Washington, DC. This was an incredible opportunity to network and advocate for legislative issues related to emergency medicine. We met with our lawmakers from New Mexico and advocated for action on surprise billing, better access to mental health services for our patients, and elimination of the X-Waiver for prescribing of buprenorphine. It was an honor to work alongside Dr. Tatsuya Norii and Dr. Eric Ketcham to educate our legislators and try to help our patients receive the care they need.

Finally, I wanted to thank everyone involved in New Mexico ACEP for helping me along my journey to becoming an emergency physician. Without the support and mentorship I received through our chapter, I am not sure that I would be where I am today. I look forward to one day returning to New Mexico to practice, and I am excited to have such intelligent and passionate individuals to call colleagues and friends. Thank you again!

States Find Tool for Quick Legislative Response

Harry J. Monroe, Jr. Director, ACEP State and Chapter Relations

Those of us that work on state legislation often struggle with the pace of activity, particularly as deadlines approach for bills to get out of committee or as the end of the session nears. When ACEP rolled out engagED as a new social media platform for member communication and collaboration, I am not sure that it was really thought of as a new tool for advocacy efforts, but its value has been shown by at least a couple of chapters.
