Northern New England EM Medical Student Council Leadership Chair

Larner College of Medicine at The University of Vermont

It has been a historic year in medical education for all of us. As of now, our members and classmates throughout New England are back in the clinic and engaging in their coursework. Additionally, all have welcomed the class of 2024 to an unprecedented start to their medical school experience. Here in Vermont, our medical student council members have been staying active and involved in addition to our traditional responsibilities. We recently spent time with the UVM emergency medicine residency faculty to record and ask some burning questions for those applying into EM this year. Due to COVID19, this application cycle is like none we have seen before and we are doing our best to help spread the word about the amazing program we have to offer here in The Green Mountain State.

Additionally, our Health Policy and Advocacy Coordinator for this MSC, Nikkole Turgeon, has been working diligently with Dr. Katie Wells on evaluating the many concerns related to social justice as they may pertain to our own emergency departments here in Vermont. As always, we will be posting our work as our group progresses on our Facebook page.

We hope all of you are staying safe and found some time and space to enjoy the summer and fall!

New Resource: COVID-19 Data Visualizations

ACEP's newest resource provides visualizations of U.S. emergency department data across three categories: total visits, COVID-like illness visits, and influenza-like illness visits. The data are available at both national and Health and Human Services (HHS) regional resolutions and across several timescales (e.g., 7-day, 30-day, 90-day). It's sortable by time and region. Data is updated weekly. View the visualizations.

The COVID-19 Crisis is Uniquely Exhausting - ACEP Can Help

It’s vital to prioritize your own mental health and this is an especially vulnerable time of year in an extremely stressful environment. Take advantage of these resources whenever you need them:

  • Did you know your ACEP membership comes with three free counseling or coaching sessions available through phone, text or online chat? And for a small extra fee, you can add on financial and/or legal assistance.

  • The Physician Wellness Hub can help you find the right support, whether you’d like to talk with a peer or a professional counselor.

It’s a great time to gently check in with your friends, family and colleagues. Worried about saying the wrong thing? Read these peer support basics.

Want to remind your team about on-site support options? Create a mental health care access map. Already have one? Resend the map so your coworkers know how to find support during the challenging weeks ahead.

ACEP hosted two Theater of War performances in 2020 and recently partnered with the Infectious Disease Society of America on a podcast discussing how these performances can help EM physicians process the unprecedented hardships of working in the ED during a pandemic. Learn more.

Last but not least: If you’re passionate about peer support in emergency medicine, we invite you to join ACEP’s Peer Support Project.

Regulatory News

Breaking Down President Biden's Executive Order on Strengthening Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act

Since taking office, President Biden has issued a plethora of executive orders, mostly related to tackling the COVID-19 pandemic and reversing or adjusting policies implemented by the last administration. As a reminder, executive orders themselves do not effectuate new policies. Rather, in most cases, they call on federal agencies to examine or institute new policies—usually through regulations. On January 28, President Biden issued a broad sweeping Executive Order on "Strengthening Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act." READ MORE
