Dear Neighbor,

February marks one year since I was sworn in to the Ohio Senate to serve the incredible people of Erie, Fulton, Lucas, Ottawa, and Wood Counties.

It is a true honor to serve you and your families in this capacity. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office if you have any thoughts or suggestions to improve our community. I’m available at Gavarone@OhioSenate.gov or 614-466-8060 or through my social media pages.

Sincerely,
State Senator Theresa Gavarone

School Bus Safety Act Moves Forward

Last year students and buses from schools in my district were involved in two high-profile accidents.  I took immediate action by introducing Senate Bill 134, the 'School Bus Safety Act,' which will bring more awareness to school bus safety issues and increase penalties for people who violate laws designed to protect students while traveling to and from school.

I appreciate the testimony many proponents gave, and I'm pleased to share with you that the Senate passed this legislation this month unanimously.

I'm looking forward to seeing this bill move quickly in the Ohio House to help further protect Ohio's children.

Bill to Improve Workplace Safety Clears Senate

Another important piece of legislation I sponsored to ban synthetic urine in Ohio came directly from a constituent. Synthetic urine is used to cheat drug tests and creates public safety concerns especially as it relates to workers who operate heavy machinery or drive on the job while under the influence.

The Senate unanimously passed
Senate Bill 156, and it has already received public support from Speaker Householder. I am hopeful this bill will soon become law!

Celebrating Ohio Agriculture at the Statehouse

I love our farmers and one of my favorites days at the Statehouse is the Ohio Farm Bureau's Ag Day!

During
their visit, we enjoyed lunch together and discussed important policy issues facing the agricultural community. I appreciate the time they took to travel to the Statehouse.

Advocating for Freedom of Religious Expression

Last month I met with Noor Abukaram, a constituent of mine who was disqualified from a race last year for wearing a hijab.  After hearing her story, I wanted to do something to ensure no one, regardless of religion, would ever be disqualified from a sport as the result of wearing religious apparel.

This week, I invited her to the Statehouse to help me introduce
Senate Bill 288, legislation to ensure no one, regardless of religion, will have to choose between playing a sport or religious beliefs.

Support for Modernizing Our Voting Process

Election and cyber security are two issues that are critically important to me, but I am also interested in ensuring easier access to voting for people who are registered to vote.

That is why I introduced
Senate Bill 191, which would modernize and streamline the process to obtain an absentee ballot. I appreciate Lucas County Board of Elections Director LaVera Scott coming down to the Statehouse to testify in favor of the bill.

Honoring Lucas County State Champion

I was excited to have the Lucas County Special Olympics Flag Football Team down at the Statehouse to present them with a resolution for their State Championship!

Recognizing 100 Years of Service
The Ability Center of Greater Toledo provides incredible services for the disabled community of NW Ohio.

I was so happy to recognize their 100 years of service on the Senate floor with a resolution!

Talking Lake Erie

I had a great conversation with Captains Dave Spangler and Paul Pacholski in Ottawa County about several different Lake Erie issues, including legislation I've sponsored to provide long-term funding for water quality.
A Wild Time at the Zoo

I took my children to the Toledo Zoo all the time when they were younger, so I was excited to get a behind-the-scenes tour and discuss their expansion project that I've supported in the upcoming Capital Budget.
Criminal Justice Reform

I met recently with Wauseon Mayor Kathy Huner and other city and Fulton County officials about criminal justice reforms being considered by the legislature.
Meeting with Farm Bureaus

I appreciate the invitation to speak at a breakfast meeting hosted by the Ottawa and Erie County Farm Bureaus.

I spoke about the H2Ohio program that the Senate provided funding for in the current state budget, and my pending legislation, including the School Bus Safety Act.
Special Olympics Winter Games

I had the amazing opportunity to take part in the Opening Ceremony at BGSU for the first-ever Special Olympics Ohio Winter Games!

I spoke briefly and presented President Rogers and CEO Jessica Stewart with President’s Letters for their work on this HUGE event!
