Volunteer Groups: Reotahi and Smugglers Track
The Reotahi Working Bee group met on Sunday 18 February and kicked off 2024 in great form! With Logan Carter leading, Rick, Eileen, Lloyd, Linda, Wayne, Robyn and newbie Terex from the US had a good go at mostly moth plant and also ginger, elaeagnus and cotoneaster in the sloping area linking the Beach Road carpark down to the beach opposite Motukaroro.
The revival of the Smugglers Track Maintenance Crew in conjunction with Bream Head Conservation Trust, saw a keen group of weeders and walkers converge on the packed Urquharts Bay carpark on Sunday 4 February. Turns out timing your conservation efforts on the same day the first cruise ship comes to Whangārei can mean a bit more walking than intended! Following in the footsteps and stories of previous group leaders Colin and Marjorie Edwards and Roger Clarke, the "new guard" were able to assess potential sites and species for control and the overall state of this iconic walking track. Of course, a bit of weeding happened along the way too.
