NEW course: Racism in Real Estate

Sponsored by MAR's Diversity Committee

The Minneapolis Area REALTORS® Diversity Committee is partnering with Mapping Prejudice to bring this course to members of MAR! MAR Members can receive a discount by using the promo code MAR2020.

This brand-new class, created by the Mapping Prejudice project, explores structural racism and the racial wealth gap as it applies to housing.

We’ll consider the role of the real estate industry in the history of racial housing discrimination and the consequences of these policies on housing equity today

Mapping Prejudice is a team of geographers, historians, digital humanists, and activists working to illustrate the history of racial discrimination in Hennepin County. They are mapping racially restrictive covenants to show that large swaths of our residential communities were protected for white households, contributing to our current racial wealth gap.

This online course has been approved by the Minnesota Commissioner of Commerce for 2.0 hours of real estate continuing education. It is open to all.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act which would cost $3 trillion. It would have initiated a second round of stimulus payments and handed out $1 trillion to State Government to help fill budget holes. The legislation is said to be "dead on arrival" in the U.S. Senate. The U.S. Senate is likely to pass something for "phase 4" but will not be using the House package as a starting point for negotiations.

The Minnesota Legislature adjourns today. The "Undone List" includes: Bonding Bill, Ratifying a State Worker Pay Raise, Legislative Oversight for the CARES Act, and any further Economic Tax Relief for the pandemic. Can anyone say, "special session?"

The City of Minneapolis is currently studying Rent Control and Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act. A new Renter Protection Ordinance is set to go into effect June 1. The city is close to releasing materials to describe the changes. MAR is working with the City of Minneapolis to hold webinars on the topic.
