Maddison Thomas: WA Young Person of the Year and Carers WA Milestone Award |
We are delighted to announce that Maddison Thomas, the recipient of the Carers WA Milestone Award has also been named Young Person of the Year at the YACWA WA Youth Awards, held at Optus Stadium on Friday, 12th September.
"After being raised in state care until she was 16, Maddison moved to live with her mother who experiences mental and physical health issues, becoming her carer. They become homeless shortly thereafter. Maddison advocated for herself and her mother in the public health and housing systems and found the care and housing they needed. Having successfully completed year 12, she is now undertaking tertiary studies to become a secondary school English teacher and strives to use her resilience, empathy, and determination to be a positive support in her future students' lives."– Youth Affairs Council WA
The Milestone Award, launched in 2024 by the Young Carer Team, recognises the personal achievements and advocacy of young carers. This dual recognition highlights the growing awareness of young carers and the importance of their contributions within our community. It is an honour to celebrate Maddison, who was independently nominated and recognised as Young Person of the Year.
Congratulations Maddison!

Emma's Story: Pursuing Her Dreams While Navigating the Caring Role |
“It’s definitely 24-hour care. You just don’t know if you’ve got to get up in the middle of the night because something’s happened.”
Emma never expected to become a full-time carer, but life changed when she met her husband, who faced severe health challenges, including multiple pulmonary embolisms. She left her job to care for him and later took on caring for his mother with early dementia and his sister with an intellectual disability.
Emma’s story showcases the resilience and compassion of women managing multiple caring roles.
