From the first of January till the end of June, Belgium chairs the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. During these six months, we will have the honour of exchanging views with numerous European policymakers visiting our port. We are happy to show what we do and why we need a European framework that allows us to take up our pioneering role. Today, the delegation of ambassadors from the 27 member states representing their member states to the European Union - COREPER 1 - visited the Antwerp platform. We debated the port’s role in the energy transition, as a circular hotspot and an innovation platform. For many of the port's projects in these areas, the European policy framework and EU funding have been crucial in getting the projects going. Because today's challenges are different from those of a few years ago, we also discussed how European policymakers will have to redefine some of the Union's actions and priorities as they soon start the next term. At the same time, we held discussions at the Bruges platform with the Working Group on Maritime Issues - European Union Maritime Security Strategy (EUMSS). The port's safety and security experts were keen to share expertise and learn from best practices from other European countries. Safety and security are crucial to our operations. We look forward to welcoming even more European delegations in the coming weeks as part of the Belgian presidency and to continue the constructive collaboration with the EU over the next years. We remain committed to being at the forefront of innovation, sustainability and economic growth. By May 17, all terminals in the Antwerp port area will be using #CertifiedPickup for the container import process. This means that PIN codes for picking up containers will disappear for all terminals both before as well as behind the locks. The benefits? Certified Pick up increases the security of the import container process and it ensures a transparent logistics chain for all partners in the supply chain. Which terminals are involved? Meet the #Methatug: world's first methanol-powered tugboat! 💚 Methanol is one of the fuels of the future as it produces lower emissions than traditional fuels. In order to achieve this, we converted the engines from an existing tugboat into ‘dual fuel’ engines running on a mixture of methanol and traditional fuel. This new tugboat is part of a greening programme for the our fleet and an important step in the transition to a climate-neutral port by 2050. The project is being financed by the European research programme Horizon 2020 and is part of the FASTWATER project, which aims to demonstrate the feasibility of methanol as a sustainable fuel for the shipping industry. The Belgian Hydrogen Council, NLHydrogen and the Nationaler Wasserstoffrat signed an Memorandum of Understanding today to further intensify cooperation between the councils. Binnenkort gaan de Oosterweelwerken van start voor de aanleg van de Kanaaltunnels in het Amerikadok en het Albertkanaal. 🏗️ Deze werken veroorzaken tijdelijke hinder voor de scheepvaart. Slechts de helft van de breedte van het vaarwater zal beschikbaar zijn, waardoor enkel eenrichtingsverkeer mogelijk wordt. Om een vlot en veilig scheepvaartverkeer mogelijk te maken, voorzien wij samen met Lantis passageplanning vanaf 13 mei.
