National Roadworthiness Survey

The National Roadworthiness Survey provides a health check of Australia’s heavy vehicle fleet, letting the NHVR monitor the make up of the heavy vehicle fleet and understand how compliant it is. This information allows us to determine where the NHVR and industry are making improvements in vehicle safety and also where more focus may be needed.

In 2016 the NHVR conducted the first National Roadworthiness Survey (NRS1), inspecting 7,130 vehicles across all states and territories, except Western Australia.

In 2021 we continued to monitor the fleet by conducting the second National Roadworthiness Survey (NRS2).

During NRS2 Authorised Officers from the NHVR and partner agencies across Australia conducted a mechanical inspection of 8,339 vehicles between May and July 2021. Each vehicle received a comprehensive visual and mechanical inspection, undertaken using the National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual (NHVIM). The random inspections occurred across all Australian states in regional and metropolitan areas.

The results of the survey help us to continue to target safety programs in key safety areas and provide feedback to operators on their vehicle roadworthiness.
