Severe weather causes significant damage in West Point
WEST POINT, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - West Point saw significant damage as severe weather struck Georgia Sunday morning.
Troup County officials say between 80 and 100 structures were damaged, with 20 to 30 suffering “major damage” in West Point.
“Services were canceled at Bethlehem Baptist Church due to severe weather. “We had to cancel church but we were here for church because our first service begins at 9 a.m,” said LaGrange mayor-elect and Rev. Willie T. Edmondson. “We heard about the tornado coming through. The interstate was blocked. We were going to have an 11 a.m. service but heard of another tornado coming through later on so we canceled the service so our members could be safe.”
Officials say there have been two to three injuries reported.
“Some of our members have been affected by it. Some of them lost their homes on Highway 29. Some of them had to go to the Wellstar emergency room. We were in the same predicament in January when other tornados came through,” said Edmondson.

Officials say there are reports of people trapped in buildings, downed power lines, and trees. A tornado slammed through the area Sunday.
Wellstar says two people are being treated at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center for injuries related to the storm.
The Red Cross has established an emergency shelter in West Point. The shelter is at Point University Gym at 1201 Ave. D.
