Overview of RIFM

Person looking into microscope studying and evaluating ingredients

RIFM has been studying and evaluating fragrance ingredients since its foundation, most recently publishing peer-reviewed safety assessments and research that it makes available via open access on Fragrance Material Safety Resource Center.

RIFM scientists come from biology, chemistry, engineering, and toxicology areas of expertise across the globe. RIFM conducts and publishes safety assessments of all ingredients used for their aroma-producing properties. RIFM’s research also supports the development of improved methods, including many animal-alternative methodologies.

All of RIFM’s safety assessments and research are evaluated by an independent panel of international experts in toxicology, dermatology, pathology, environmental, reproduction, and respiratory science with no ties to the fragrance industry. It is this panel that provides the scientific authority and objectivity to RIFM’s work.
