Description

Pysanky are also called Ukrainian Easter Eggs. The traditional art has been practiced for thousands of years in celebration of spring and new life.

This exhibit of decorated eggs is presented by the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery and the Ohio Statehouse Museum Education Center. The eggs are displayed in the Ohio Statehouse Rotunda, and more eggs can be seen at the Riffe Gallery, which is across High Street from the Statehouse in the Riffe Center.

In both locations, visitors may enjoy the beautiful designs from the collections of artist Christina Pereyma and of Lucy Sanders. Pereyma is of Ukrainian decent and was raised in Troy, Ohio. Her mother Aka Pereyma was 2003 recipient of an Ohio Arts Council Ohio Heritage Fellowship award for Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs) – a unique cultural tradition.

These works were created by Jacqueline Klym, Vaka Farrara, Helen O’Neal, Tanya Oscada, Aka Pereyma, and Christina Pereyma.

One broken shell is included in the display to show the inside of the empty egg, and to emphasize the delicate nature of this artform.

To see more Pysanky at the Riffe Gallery, walk across the street at the corner of State Street and High Street, or go into the Riffe Center through the Ohio Statehouse Underground Parking Garage.
