Dear Aimee,

The 2018 edition of AS/NZS 3000:2018, Electrical Installations (known as the Wiring Rules) has been released with key updates in important areas, such as main switches, residual current devices (RCDs) and DC wiring systems.

Electrical contractors will have a 6 month transition period for compliance. That transition period will finish and the new rules will be the single source of compliance from 1 January 2019.

How to purchase a hard copy

NECA WA members can get a hard copy of the new rules at a discounted rate from NECA WA's Head Office from late July of only $199 + GST (SAI Global's price is $227 + GST). This is is the cheapest way for NECA WA members to get a copy.

If you wish to pre-order your copy, please email us at
necawa@necawa.asn.au and advise us of your company and contact details, the number of copies you would like to purchase and your Purchase Order number (if applicable).

We will inform you once the stock has arrived to process your order.

How to purchase a PDF copy

NECA WA will not be selling electronic PDF copies of the Wiring Rules. If members wish to purchase an electronic copy they must do so directly via SAI Global.

Don't be tempted to use the pirated version that has been circulating on social media. It is not accurate and, given it can be edited by anyone, you can't be sure it's correct. The official Standards Australia copy will have a purple cover.

Wiring Rules on TKB

The new Wiring Rules will also be available to search on TKB by the end of July.

What's new with the Wiring Rules?

With over 200 proposed changes, the new edition is being updated in line with new technology, equipment, and improved installation practices and will remain in two major sections:
  • Part One provides uniform essential elements and minimum regulatory requirements for safe electrical design and installation.
  • Part Two provides updated work methods and installation practices that are ‘deemed to comply’ with performance outcomes and safety conditions.
The new edition will contain over 600 pages and includes:
  • 194 specific changes
  • 6 new appendices
  • 54 complete new clauses
  • Section 7 (Special Electrical Installations) to be completely re-written
Although the above sounds like a lot, many of the changes are quite minor. We recommend all members register to attend a NECA WA Technical Information Session to ensure you are across all of the changes.

NECA WA Technical Information Sessions - we're here to help you!

In case you missed our Wiring Rules Roadshow events last year, we will be providing further information sessions to explain the changes, now that the Wiring Rules have been released.

Information sessions will be run throughout the state during August/September 2018. We will advise of the dates shortly via email, and publish them on our Facebook page and website.

In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding the new rules don't hesitate to contact NECA WA Technical on 1300 6322 8324 or email
technical@necawa.asn.au.
