Shaun King, Sen. Durbin speak at Smart Decarceration national conference
The Smart Decarceration Initiative hosted its second successful national conference, “Tools and Tactics: Promising Solutions to Advance the Era of Smart Decarceration,” November 2-4 at the University of Chicago, drawing participants from all over the country. Also this fall, the Center for Social Development celebrated the publication of the book “Smart Decarceration: Achieving Criminal Justice Transformation in the 21st Century."

'Toxic Inequality' and 'Financial Diaries' authors share insights
The Center for Social Development was honored to host two events in October featuring the authors of two important books: “Toxic Inequality: How America’s Wealth Gap Destroys Mobility, Deepens the Racial Divide, and Threatens Our Future” and “The Financial Diaries: How American Families Cope in a World of Uncertainty.”

Event honors 'founder of modern ecology'
The event “Social Justice and the Environment” commemorated what would have been Barry Commoner’s 100th year. People gathered  to honor the man who ignited America’s modern environmental movement. 
HomeGrown STL nears action ‘on the ground’
​HomeGrown STL is close to putting its strategy for collective impact to work. The project, part of the Center for Social Development’s Race and Opportunity Lab, aims to support the social mobility of black males ages 12 to 29 in St. Louis City and County.
